Art. 4 – Growing process

The De.C.O.”mini-eggplant Perlina of Comiso” is grown in a protected environment (greenhouses covered with polyethylene film or other covering material) and taking into account the consumer concerns with regards to toxic waste, utilizes plants grafted on Solanum Torvum (a type of wild eggplant naturally resistant to pests) in order to avoid chemical treatments normally carried out on the soil. The transplant on mulched soil with opaque polyethylene is carried out in the second half of September on double rows, 80 cm apart into the row and 100 cm in between rows, with plants up to 50 cm on the row. The operations on the plant are limited to flattening and defensive actions. The covering fertilization is carried out through a fertirrigation system which employs water-soluble fertilizers with a 1-0, 5-1,8 ratio to the concentration of approximately 0,05%. Harvesting begins about 80 days after the transplant and can be made by single fruit or cluster. The average production per plant is about 1,5-2 kg. The production cycle takes place in autumn, winter and spring (from October until June). Plants are grown in greenhouses in order to avoid the use of pesticides on the soil, resorting to the ancient practice of clip-on resistant foot, whereas the pollination is made by Bumble bees (insects similar to bees), that are particularly sensitive to pesticides, therefore drastically limiting their use. Nutrition is ensured predominantly by making use of manure with little supplements of mineral fertilizers. Soilless cultivation is not allowed.
